the maine event

mikey and i decided that our vacation this august will be to Maine. I have not been up there since 2001 which is a shame considering i have family there (ahem, whom i emailed, but have yet to receive a reply!!!!). so it really is about time. and mikey has never been. we’re going to drive up (which could be a mistake) since i would like to include delia on the trip. we’ve found many dog friendly hotels in portland and bar harbor (our two destinations) and it’s really just a matter of picking one. we’ll probably take a scenic route up, stopping somewhere along the way, and then hit portland for a few days and then bar harbor for a few before returning home.

in mother’s day news, the family came up–ma and pa, connie and norm and cordell–for lunch. the restaurant was a success! except cordell seemed a little disappointed in his lunch (french toast) but since he is my sister’s kids and raised in a home with two very finicky eaters, that’s understandable. i did get him to eat blue cheese without him realizing it. he also tasted a basil/mint yogurt, but decided “it’s disgusting”. fortunately, he said it just loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear. he ordered an orange soda (god, he’s so black) which they didn’t have, so i had the waiter make him a sprite with a good amount of orange/tangerine juice in it.

before lunch, we went on the roof of our building since i don’t think anyone from my family has been up there EVER. they wanted to see what the view was like. cord told me his dad now lived in maryland which i did not know so i asked wherebout, and cord just said “there are a lot of black people there.” on our way to the restaurant, we passed by the womens shelter ’round the corner and cord saw a lady eating her styrofoam cup. i dont know why she was doing that, but i tried (and failed) to explain to him that not all homeless people are mentally troubled and not all mental cases are homeless. i said she was there to get help. he looked at me like “bitch is crazy”.

anyway. when it comes time to pay the bill in my family, it’s really about who can be the sneakiest. my dad is so used to paying all the time, and let’s be honest, most of the time i am happy to let him. however, since i did invite everyone up i figured mikey and i would foot the bill for lunch. of course, my mom was like, you are NOT going to pay the bill and i could see my dad getting out his card, but luckily i’m very sly and had already slipped my card to the waiter long before anyone thought about vacating the table. i’m sure the next time we all eat out, it will be a competition to see who can the slip the waiter their card the quickest.
