a walk in the park
i took the pooch for a long afternoon stroll along the paths that run from the airport down into old town all along the potomac river. she smells disgusting now since she played around in the water for a bit. she drank some of it too. she’s probably going to die now. anyway, at one point the path cuts through a marshy area where i saw…well, at first i thought it was an alligator and i have no idea why that was the first thing that popped into my head, but then i realized it was a beaver. beavers and dogs do not mix well in my family (a story i may have told before, or may need to in order to illustrate my point–decision later) and i was very cautious so that a repeat incident did not occur. we were on a bridge that was juuuuuuuust high enough off the water so that we could watch the beaver swim around without worrying that it would jump up out of the water at us…so we watched it for a while until it disappeared under the murky water at which point i got a little freaked out because even though it was probably not plotting any schemes, i couldn’t help but think about those great whites that dive way down and then come straight up from below to attack seals at the surface. you’ve seen the videos…the great whites fly out of the water like crazy high. so i sort of thought the beaver might be preparing to do that, diving deep in order to swim as fast as he can to the surface and launch himself at me and the dog. i have a very active imagination. but i don’t need any beavers flying at my face. and please take that as the double entendre it was intended to be.oh and i’ve decided that i think i’m getting better looking with age.
