for a look at real people who actually know what they are talking about, please check awardsdaily over there on the right side of the page. these people are far more knowledgeable of the process and patterns of the academy and probably offer greater insight than just my ol’ biased picks. anyway, it is that time of year and as the Globes loom in the future and the oscars after that, since i have nothing better to do today, i thought i would go ahead and list who i think will be nominated for the major awards–not who i think deserves it, but who i think will be picked. let’s get started.
Best Supporting Actress:
Definites: Viola Davis from Doubt, Amy Adams from Doubt, Penelope Cruz from Vicky Christina Barcelona, RoseMarie DeWitt from Rachel Getting Married, and Marisa Tomei from The Wrestler
but don’t count out: Debra Winger from Rachel Getting Married and Taraji P. Hinson from Benjamin Button and Kate Winslet from The Reader
shocker: that girl who played the drunk girl from Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist
Best Supporting Actor:
Definites: Robert Downey Jr from Tropic Thunder, Philip Seymour Hoffman from Doubt, Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight and Josh Brolin and James Franco from Milk
But don’t count out: Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire
shocker: Heath Ledger not getting nominated
Best Actress:
Definites: Meryl Streep from Doubt, Anne Hathaway from Rachel Getting Married, Kate Winslet from Revolutionary Road, Sally Hawkins from Happy-Go-Lucky and Melissa Leo from Frozen River
But don’t count out: Cate Blanchette from Benjamin Button, Angelina Jolie from The Changeling and Kristin Scott Thomas from I’ve Loved You So Long
Shocker: Winslet splits votes for The Reader and Revolutionary Road and ends up getting snubbed in both categories
Best Actor:
Definites: Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler, Sean Penn for Milk, Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon, Brad Pitt for Benjamin Button and Clint Eastwood for Gran Torina
But don’t count out: Leo DiCaprio for Revolutionary Road
Shocker: Eastwood fatigue OR Robert Downey Jr. for Ironman
