my questionable taste in music this week

so with american idol now in the midst of hollywood week, and more and more girls are given exposure, i can start singling out the ones that i root for.  and these are the characteristics i typically look for in my idol favorites: poor, illiterate, shy, kind of over weight, probably got a kid or two, lacking commercial looks, perhaps a background singer, perhaps from the church, can belt a note or two, and most likely, female and black.

last week i excitedly announced at work that i purchased the new melinda doolittle album and received nothing but blank stares in return. “who’s that?” and “bitch, if they are black and on idol, you will buy it, won’t you?” are all i got after a brief silence. let’s see, tamyra gray? check. trenyce and kimberly locke from season two? double check. fantasia, latoya london and j-hud? duh. paris bennet? aka princess P? hells yes. lakisha jones, melinda doolittle, and jordin sparks? sho’ nuff.

so let’s get back to ‘Lindee ‘Doo (Melinda Doolittle). now, entertainment gave her debut album a B+ and they typically aren’t very kind to idol fodder trying to put out a debut album, but this album is soooooooo fantastic. i love the retro sounds, the real instruments and you can tell that ‘Lindee ‘Doo is just itching to perform these live. it’s a bit tina turner-esque, a bit of ‘Retha, and all sass and spice.

so the “Recently Played” playlist goes something like this:

I Will Be, It’s Your Love, Dust my Broom, and Declaration of Love by Melinda Doolittle
My Boyfriend’s Back by Paris Bennet (i love her version of this song because she incorporates “thug” “trippin” and “get to steppin” into it)
This Ain’t a Love Song by Lakisha Jones
I Believe by Fantasia
Save Me by Jordin Sparks
Halo by Beyonce (how’d she get in there!)
If This isn’t Love by J-hud

Seriously, these girls owe me big time.
