matthew henry and the half wit blonde
so at approximately noon today i sat down at the uptown theater to watch the latest installment of the harry potter franchise and i say approximately because there were some technical delays which allowed for me to listen in on the riveting conversation i’m about to recount between the two six year old girls sitting directly in front of me.
one was a brunette, one was blonde. both could use a VO5 hot oil treatment. both were drinking diet coke. from what i could tell, the brunette was a bit of a cinephile while her friend was perhaps retarded. either way, i found them to be hilarious. oh and the mother of the blonde was there too.
well, let’s call the brunette Girl One and the other Girl Two.
Girl One: Did you see Borat?
Girl Two: What?
Girl One: Borat. it’s the same guy who did Bruno.
Girl Two: Huh?
Girl One: Well, i thought the naked wrestling scene was weird but over all i liked the movie.
Girl Two: blank stare
Mother of Girl Two: your mom let you watch Borat?
then later…some how on the topic of drew barrymore
Girl One: did you see Grey Gardens?
Girl Two: What?
Girl One: Grey Gardens. With Jessica Lang? It was so amazing. My mom and i are going to watch the documentary it was based on.
Girl Two: Huh?
Girl One: well, you should watch it. (to the mother) did you see the documentary?
Mother of Girl Two: no, but i’d like to.
Girl One: you should.
and still later…
Girl One: do you like Woody Allen movies?
–i have to interrupt and remind everyone that this girl is like six years old
Girl Two: Who?
Girl One: Woody Allen. I really prefer his older films.
Girl Two: Who?
Girl One: i love Diane Keaton. My mom and i watched Annie Hall and she’s in a lot of his movies.
Girl Two: Who?
Girl One: Woody Allen! Pay attention! some of his newer films aren’t that funny, but his older stuff is. (to the mother) do you like woody allen films?
Mother of Girl Two: are you serious?
i felt so bad for the blond cause she’s like a normal six year old who was probably thinking about a pony the entire conversation…and while i think it’s great that ther film snob has been exposed to a variety of filmmakers and genres at such an early age, she made me very uncomfortable. it like watching a movie with dakota fanning.

What did you think of the movie? I saw it last night and really liked it. A co-worker of mine saw it too and felt the need to turn a movie critic on me about how he didn’t think “the story was developed.” Whatever! And he hasn’t even read the books!
