kin-delia
mikey got me a kindle for my birthday. after hinting at it once or twice the past year, my wanting became more of a need as mikey moved in and my birthday approached. i have a ton of books but very little space. and with school requiring even more books, i have zero bookshelf space to spare.
i thought about going through my books and maybe donating some to a library and i suppose i will…but in the meantime, i’ve run out of room. and the kindle (registered as “kin-delia” just for fun) is actually kind of cool. it can hold thousands of books and i bought a nice leather cover for it so that it doesn’t get scratched or dirty. most books cost 9.99 as opposed to 20 or 30 dollars. i can also subscribe to magazines, newspapers and blogs. see ya barnes and noble.
the only downside for me is there’s just something to holding a book in your hands and curling up in comfy chair and reading. the feel of the paper, the smell of the binding. and i imagine, as i take it out in public on the plane or train or sitting at a cafe, people will look at me much like the way i look at people on segways: ugh, really? i have never seen someone reading on a kindle before. i don’t know anyone who has one. which is odd for me.
i’ve never been ahead of the trend curve. maybe with tongue rings, but that was many years ago. i was like the last person to buy cds. one of the last to get a lap top. perhaps the last to get an ipod. i was probably a early to mid pioneer on the bluray front. by no means was i the first, but i was the first among people that i know. i’m very averse to technological change, not that i’m against it, it’s just i know it’s always advancing and everything is outdated the minute it’s developed. so once i get comfortable with something, it’s frustrating because i know there are already two or three more advanced technologies already out there. so i feel kind of hip and with it, to own this latest gadget that, let’s be honest, is also very green. at least in concept. i don’t know how green it is to manufacture one of these things.
