get a sitter
on saturday, since i managed to get most of my homework done in the wee hours of friday night into saturday morning, mikey and i decided to go see Precious. i read the book earlier this year when i heard the film floored audiences at Sundance. of course i have heard all the hype about the performances, particularly that of Mo’nique and Gabourey Sidibe. they definitely rock in this movie, and should be rewarded very handsomely come awards season (which is just beginning!!!!). the whole cast is excellent, from Mariah Carey and Sherri Shepard (yeah, i said it), to the unknowns who played her fellow alternative school classmates (’Heeeeey, my name is Joanne, my favorite coluh is florescent beige…”) and someone i think that will be shamefully overlooked come awards time is the marvelous Paula Patton who played her teacher. compared to the two powerhouse roles occupied by Mo and Gabby, her role is obviously less flashy, but by no means an easy performance.
anyway.
after the movie, we met the straights at the house and then ventured off to try ChurchKey, above Birch and Barley, and their many many many beers. now, to me, corona is getting fancy, but their beer list, hell, i can’t pronounce most it. it’s INSANE. and to top it off, i don’t know if it’s because the alcohol content in some of them is stronger than your average beer, but after two or three, they all started tasting alike anyway. but the vibe is cool and i would definitely go there again. although, the line out the door wasn’t really necessary as it wasn’t that packed inside. but i understand that technically being a restaurant they probably have a capacity limit.
tables upstairs are first come first serve so we actually had to wait while a long table of straights with their kids (?) took 30 minutes to gather their shit and leave. which was annoying. seriously? you brought your kids? to a bar? let’s get real here, the upstairs is a bar. restaurant downstairs, bar upstairs. i guess when we were in line and saw a woman coming downstairs with a baby, THAT should have been a clue that there may have been some assholes up there.
