end of an era
i’m lucky in that my family lives close by. so in addition to my folks, brother, sister, their spouses, niece and nephews, i’m lucky enough to also have my urban family–you know, those friends who you text and call when you want to have wine on a rooftop, or an early game of tennis, or who you know you can just walk up the street to find them sitting out on the stoop gossiping and carrying on. Or you find them coming to your rescue when you’ve been hurt, showing up with sword and shield to fight your battles with you.
those who make up my lil gang, are from all over…South Carolina, upstate new york, and, er, suburban maryland. I’d like to think that i’m their family too, their family away from family…even though i’m somewhat of a curmudgeon, sometimes too responsible, and perhaps a tad bit overly anal retentive. I also think i’m good for a laugh, a night out, some sage advice, a lunch date, a shoulder to lean on, a trip to the mall, or an afternoon of moving (side-eye to kai).
first loretta left us for atlanta. then clizzay took a job in brussels, and now every weekend he’s in yet another fabulous city having amazing adventures. timtation is in school and hosting an online entertainment show. Scotti G is making new friends and still out there looking for love (or a quick lay)–when he’s not tied up at the opera. and now kai (aka Mary Pat or Ruby or Lil Sister) is leaving us for a flat in chelsea in the big NYC, new job and new opportunities awaiting his arrival.
I really couldn’t be more proud of us. the whole gang. maybe it’s growing up; maybe it’s moving on.
The other night i made mikey watch Lilo and Stich, a disney movie about a little orphan space alien who ends up on earth and finds his family, albeit an unconventional one. i’m a big ol’ sap, so this moving always brings me to tears…but this part, in particular (and particularly now), really resonates with me. it gives me the sads.
“it’s little. and broken. but still good. yeah. still good.”
