columbine

i skipped my last class that afternoon as word spread around campus about the school shooting and returned to my dorm to watch the rest of the news coverage.

i’m currently reading Columbine by Dave Cullen, not noticing that i started the book on the ten year anniversary of the shooting.

it’s still horrifying. even just reading about it. what we thought it was wasn’t really it at all, at least according to what i’ve read so far. a decade or so of research and interviews has debunked the assumptions that were made in those first few days, assumptions and rumors that sort of stuck in everyone’s mind as the reason why and then remained there long after the media moved on to other things even though it wasn’t quite the truth. one of them had attended his prom the weekend before with twelve of his friends.

the Waco debacle, the Oklahoma City bombing, Columbine and Va Tech all happened roughly the same time period in April. i understand the first three are somewhat connected as either a revenge for or a one-up on another. still, it’s kind of eerie.

also, columbine is going down in history as perhaps the first situation where cells phones both helped and hindered how the situation played out in the media.

i’m going to bed. it’s raining. debbie downer.
