awards season…
is in full swing. nom noms for the globes and the SAG awards and the spirit awards, plus numerous critics picks and top ten lists, have all pointed us down the long and winding road to the oscar noms which come out…eh, sometime. so here are my picks as to who will be nominated in the major categories:
Picture (there are now TEN nominees)
IN: The Hurt Locker, Up in the Air, Avatar, Up, Inglorious Basterds and Precious
But don’t count out: An Education, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Invictus
and don’t be surprised if this gets in: Star Trek or 500 Days of Summer
I would LOVE if this got in: District 9
this whole ten nominees thing is really throwing me for a loop. i think the definites are those five or six up top…but honestly, with ten, who knows how it’s going to work out. i don’t know if i can call this one, which makes this all the more fun and the show more exciting.
Best Director:
IN: Quention, Cameron, Eastwood, Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), and Reitman
But don’t count out: Lee Daniels (Precious), the Coens (A Serious Man)
and don’t be surprised if this gets in: Ford (A Single Man)
I would LOVE if this got in: Blomkamp (District 9)
unfortunately, i’m not sure many new directors will be nominated. there are just too many strong previous nominees and winners making films this year. i do think Kathryn Bigelow will be the first female winner ever.
Best Actor:
IN: George Clooney for Up in the Air, Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, Morgan Freeman (Invictus) and Colin Firth (A Single Man)
but don’t count out: Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker)
and don’t be surprised if this gets in: Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine
I would love if he got in: the dude from District 9 (uh, do we see a pattern here?)
again, many former nominees (Clooney, Bridges, Freeman, Day-Lewis)…but i’m going to say Clooney or Firth will win. or they could go with Bridges for the career acknowledgement win. oh, who the hell knows.
Best Actress:
IN: Meryl (duh), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gaby Sidibe (Precious)
but don’t count out: Sandy B for the Blind Side and Marion Cottilard for Nine
and don’t be surprised if this gets in: Emily Blunt for The Young Victoria
I would love if she got in: huh. can’t really think of anyone that I would love to see recognized. it’s been a weak year.
…which means it’s Meryl Streeps to lose. let’s be honest, bitch has been nominated so many damn times but not won since (what?) 1982? it’s time to give her her third for what is actually a very memorable performance. although i think she should have won for the Devil Wears Prada.
Best Supporting Actor:
IN: Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds), Woody Harrelson for The Messenger and Stanley Tucci (for either Julie and Julia OR The Lovely Bones)
but don’t count out: Matt Damon for Invictus and Christopher Plummer for The Last Station
and don’t be surprised if he gets in: Christian McKay for Me and Orson Welles
i would love if he gets in: Alex Baldwin for It’s Complicated or Zach Galefinakis for The Hangover
i think it’s Waltz’s to lose.
Best Supporting Actress:
IN: Monique (Precious), Kendrick and Farmiga (for Up in the Air), Julianne Moore (A Single Man)
but don’t count out: Penelope Cruz for Nine
and don’t be surprised if: Melanie Laurant for Inglorious Basterds
I would love if she gets in: Jane Lynch (for Julie and Julia)
Monique is going to win.
