the dog ate my homework
so on today’s oprah show she had on really smart dogs. like really smart.
dogs who could dance to Gloria Estafan and the Miami Sound Machine’s Conga, dogs who could do handstands, dogs who had only two legs, dogs who…well, dogs who could do math. by tapping out the answers with her little puppy paws. yeah. i know.
i’m going to have to hire a tutor.
since we’re on the topic of dogs (which we seem to be doing a lot lately), i thought about listing my favorite books about dogs. so here goes:
Watchers by Dean Koontz. i read this book in 6th grade and i think i have written about it before. in fact, i’m sure i have. made me cry.
Marley and Me by John Grogan. the movie is coming out this winter. made me cry.
Where the Red Fern Grows…can’t remember who wrote it; i read it in the fifth grade. made me cry.
and finally, i just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain and i bawled at the end. for an hour, with delia in a bear hug not knowing what the hell was going on. more so than any other book about a dog. the thing is, any book written about a dog, you know the dog is going to die. or come close. but i have never ever been moved by the death of a dog in a book until i finished this one. i think it may be because the story is told by the dog. the dog, Enzo, is the narrator and far more than in any other book, you really get to know this dog. his likes and dislikes, his joys and frustrations, the whole story about the Swift family is told from Enzo’s perspective. the end is heartbreaking…even though you know it’s coming. hell, the book opens with Enzo an old boy looking back at his life, so you know, when it circles back around, dog is gon’ die. here is an excerpt to get you going. if you are not crying by the end of this book, you are dead inside.
