Swim Relay: the Movie
after a great–and very tense–relay in the pool over there in the ‘Jing, i couldn’t help notice as the americans stood at the podium receiving their gold medals and the national anthem played that the four of them kind of resembled your basic four characters of any “team” portrayed in the movies. make sense? probably not, but here goes:
michael phelps is obviously like the “hero”, the leader, the one everyone expects to do well, the good guy and kind of the “straight” guy to the other three more, uh, eccentric teammates.
jason (can’t remember his last name, but he was the 4th leg of the race and in my opinion, the real hero of that relay win) is, according to even the commentators, the sort of lazy loose cannon, a veteran who never really achieved what his potential showed, until now. coming through at the end, becoming the hero he was always meant to be.
then there’s like the young spitfire, again, who’s name i can’t remember, but this was his first olympic swim and during the national anthem he kind of started giggling and you just know that he wanted to go pick a fight with those french bastards once the cameras shut off.
and then there’s some random black guy who doesn’t really serve any purpose other than to be the black guy and say things like “let’s get these mutha-fucka’s”…which he probably did in reference to the french team, either before or after the race or both.
i felt like after the anthem ended and they did one more photo op, they were going to board a space craft and go blow up an asteroid that was heading for earth.
and ps: those chinese gymnasts are ten years old. they are not 16.
