getting to know you
the pooch and i rarely, if ever, encounter anyone in the building on our post-daddy-has-to-work walks.
so of course, tonight, after our walk, we were due. we come in the lobby, and i press the up button on the elevator which was currently down in the parking garage level. the doors open, and well, hello stranger! the pooch immediately lets out a single bark that shakes the very foundation of the building, probably waking up, at the very least, residents on the first and second floor.
she’s already the most feared, loudest dog in the building–i once had a complete stranger come up to me at the bar, tell me he lives in my building and the proceeds to ask “what’s up with your dog?”. i’m so proud–anyway, so the guy in the elevator shows no fear and welcomes us into the elevator, even asking me which floor and pressing #3.
i tell him that my dog is very friendly and contrary to what he may have heard or what he may know (she did bite someone years ago–long story, charges were dismissed.), she only hates other dogs. she’s very friendly with people and great with kids (i’m hiring her out for children’s birthday parties). he reaches out to pet her and she very happily allows him to pet her head…and then she goes in for the kill. you know how some dogs like to stick their noses in crotches. well, the pooch attempted to shove her whole head in there. i mean, she went above and beyond the call of duty, in fact, i believe she was trying to lift him by using her head, placed oh-so-not-delicately between his legs.
i say, “delia! no! that’s rude!” and give a little tug on her leash.
he says, “no it’s okay.”
i say, “no, she knows she’s supposed to sit in the elevator”. and she does. she’s very good about that. i just have to look at her, snap my fingers and her little butt is glued to the floor. it’s always her shining moment with people and they always compliment me on how well behaved my dog is (if they only knew).
but again, he says, “no, it’s okay. i don’t mind.”
really? alright. ’cause that’s not weird or anything. so i just let her do her thing until we got off the elevator. eh, at least she made a new friend.
